Working together: towards the National Strategy on Human Rights

On 14 November, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights hosted a discussion on the preparation of the National Strategy on Human Rights. The conversation was facilitated by the Ombudsperson of Ukraine, representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UN agencies in Ukraine, and human rights organizations.

Human rights activists will bring the National Bank before a court for discrimination of Crimean Ukrainians

As announced at a press conference on 14 November, human rights groups asked the court to abolish unlawful provisions of the National Bank of Ukraine Decree №699 as of 03.11.2014 that discriminate against Ukrainian citizens residing or registered in Crimea. Currently, Crimeans have limited access to basic banking services, including opening of accounts, currency exchange, payments, etc.

Round table “Strategic litigation in the European Court of Human Rights”

On 12 November, a joint roundtable of Ukrainian Bar Association and Strategic Litigations Platform was held in Kyiv. There was a discussion with the judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk and Executive Director of Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union Arkadiy Bushchenko.

Presentation of the "Novyi Donbas" project aimed at restoring infrastructure and community in eastern towns of Ukraine

On 13 November, the national news agency UKRINFORM hosted a presentation of the "Novyi Donbas" project for the public, press, and possible partners. It aims to help residents of ruined towns in eastern Ukraine to return to civilian life after combat and initiate the emergence of civil society.

Ecolegal roundtable brings ecological issues to the fore

On 6 November, the roundtable "Strategic Litigation: its Role and Place in Protecting Environmental Rights and Environment" of the ecolegal national platform convened a panel of lawyers, judges, activists, and journalists to discuss how to solve ecological problems. The event was organized with the support of the UNDP project "Democratization, Human Rights and Civil Society Development in Ukraine."

Human rights advocates inform international community about the human rights situation in Crimea and eastern Ukraine

On 5 November, diplomats, representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and international experts on human rights gathered in Geneva to hear the assessment of Ukrainian human rights defenders of the human rights situation in Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
