The United Nations Convention on Anti-Corruption (UNCAC) is the most comprehensive international agreement on principles of preventing and fighting corruption. But what is in it?
And what is in it for Ukraine?
A rather comprehensive overview of the Convention, its status and core principles are presented in this analytical brief crafted by the U4 Anticorruption Resource Centre.
Additional information about the Convention, its accessions and ratification status can be found within the specialized page of the
UNODC website, as the Secretariat of the Convention.
Regardless of being the first comprehensive international treaty to combat corruption, UNCAC's review mechanism and implementation mechanisms that would track progress made stand in need of improvement, as noted in the
most recent research by Transparency International.
Ukraine, having
ratified UNCAC in 2006, already underwent the first round of review and has received recommednations by a panel of international experts.
The results of the first round of review are summarized in a brief country report issued in November 2012. Both the review brief findings and recommendations, as well as a shadow report prepared by Transparency International Ukraine may be found below.
The time before Ukraine enters its next review cycle after 2015 is a crucial time-span that is to be used for addressing existing loopholes, fixing systemic problems and acting upon corruption concerns resolutely and through principles of indiscriminate rule of law.
