On 15-16 December, a meeting of Regional coordinators for public relations of Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights was carried out in Kyiv. The participants summarized the experience of their activities throughout 2014, identified goals and objectives and developed an action plan for Regional coordinators and representatives of the Human Rights Commissioner for 2015.
Staff of the Commissioner's Office delivered trainings to Regional coordinators on Commissioner's activity in the realm of personal data protection and right to access to public information, as well as further implementation of the national preventive mechanism.
Valeriya Lutkovska, Human Rights Commissioner, noted: "Engaging Regional coordinators to the activities of the Human Rights Commissioner allows for promptly addressing the incidents of human rights violations, receiving documents necessary to address problems raised in the claims, meeting with claimants, and handling issues on site. Due to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea, the Regional coordinators are now entrusted with a responsible mission to monitor the observance of rights of conscripts, military servants and members of their families, and IDPs, especially children deprived of parental care. These tasks are numerous, thus we expect on further expansion of the network of Regional coordinators, who are 11 so far."
During the second day of meeting, the participants searched for solutions of problems, developed common vision of a functional system and drafted an action plan for 2015.
To remind: Regional PR coordinators of the Human Rights Commissioner are working on voluntary basis upon the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Commissioner and the Association of Ukrainian Human Rights Monitors on Law Enforcement within the framework of UNDP project "Promoting the activities of Secretariat of the Human Rights Commissioner through target support of the projects of civil society organizations."
The event was organized with the support of UN Development Programme in Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
